Context

In the medieval times, red and purple were considered wealthy or royal colors. Buckles were commonly used as clasps for girdles or belts, and for the wealthy and royal they were often made to be decorative.

There seems to be no "Order of the Crimson Buckle" or anything. My guess is that Sir Roland got this title because he often wore a crimson buckle. If that was the case, it would make sense for people to describe him as the "Knight of the Crimson Buckle." It's like his title "Haver of a Great Beard." People were often described in literature by their distinguishing characteristics, and it wouldn't surprise me if Sir Roland himself started adding those phrases to his impressive "collection" of titles.
