Roddrick, Castilian of Batavia

Connections

  • Roddrick once complained about the messes that Onyx would leave behind when she dealt with intruders to Castle Batavia.

Context

I have struggled to find what exactly is meant by "Castilian." A search of the term shows that "Castilian" refers to people from Castile, a region in Spain. In fact, Castilian also refers to the dialect of Spanish spoken in most of the country of Spain.

Does this mean that Castle Batavia was in Spain? Probably not. If "Castilian" was part of Roddrick's "title," then it probably means he was one of (if not the only) Castilian around. Then again, there was a Rodrigo of Castile back in the late 800s AD. He was the first count of Castile. Perhaps this Roddrick was a royal ambassador of some kind? Possibly, but that doesn't explain his complaint about "cleaning up burgler," since that sounds like the work of a lowly member of the janitorial staff or something.

  1. My guess is that his position is the one of castellan, but BMG wanted to make a word seem/feel archaic or more special and decided to write it like that
