Research: Assumptions & Methods

On this page, I establish the assumptions and methodology behind my research for this site, in the hopes that you can get an idea of how I gather and organize my information.

Assumptions

To start off, I feel it is important to establish some basic research assumptions and guidelines:
  • Priority is given to information clearly given in the game itself (lore pages, character animations, etc.). Any direct contradictions will favor more recent information.
  • Real world history and cultures as we know it today is generally assumed in the earth of the Brawlhalla universe, unless contradicted by in-game lore. In such a case, lore takes precedence.
  • The order in which the legends entered Valhalla is not necessarily the order in which they appeared in the game. This is made clear after an initial reading of the lore. (Note: Each legend's page will still include the number they appeared in the game, but not Valhalla admittance order.)

Methods

Here is an explanation for how I find and organize my information:
  • It is understood that when the developers of Blue Mammoth Games are creating a new legend, they begin with a unique weapon combination, then settle on fitting archetypes or "buzzwords" (such as "Viking," "Skeleton," "Inuit," or "Magic/Mage") before getting into character design, signature move sets, and backstory. Understanding the archetype(s) of a legend will assist in searching for information on relevant folklore, mythology, and history (for example, knowing Lin Fei is based on a "Wuxia" archetype will direct my research about her towards information on a certain genre of Chinese fiction).
  • Due to the enormous number and diversity of topics covered on this site, my research will focus on using internet searches and online encyclopedias, fact-checking where necessary.
  • Unless I use hard-to-find information or a direct quote, citing sources is not considered necessary for this fan project (unless people want to see "Wikipedia" or similarly huge online resources appear in parentheses all over the place). Even so, I will often provide hyperlinks in the text itself for the benefit of those who want to learn more or see where my information came from.
If you believe any information on this site is in any way inaccurate, I am happy to admit my mistakes and correct them as soon as I can. Please contact me by email (barondipitous@gmail.com) regarding inaccuracies or missing information. I will generally ask for credible sources to support such corrections.
