If you are unfamiliar with Brawlhalla, it is a free-to-play 2D
platform fighting video game (other such games in the platform fighting
genre include Brawlout, Rivals of Aether, and the Super Smash Bros.
series) developed by Blue Mammoth Games in 2015. The basic premise is
that legendary fighters from countless times and spaces end up in
Valhalla, the warrior's paradise. Seeing that these fighters need an
outlet for their aggressive, chaotic behavior even in the afterlife, the
Norse god Odin created the Grand Tournament to satisfy this outlet (and
prevent his kingdom from going to pieces). The game boasts a thriving online community on many social media platforms (Reddit, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and others)
The focus
of most online discussion about Brawlhalla is its mechanics and gameplay (the
move sets and combos each legend can make to damage your opponent and
send them off the screen) and the developers have been doing tremendous
work to keep the game balanced and interesting. Their continuous work
and interaction with the fans and community of the game over the past 4 years is impressive and just plain awesome.
What I'm really interested
in, however, is the lore of the game. A new legend is introduced into
Brawlhalla each month, generally, and with it comes a new page of lore
describing the background and accomplishments of that character. This is
neat by itself, but I (and many other fans) have noticed that most
characters' lore pages reference some of the same places, events, and even other legends.
This has led to some general theorizing about the Brawlhalla universe
on social media platforms.
