Context

It seems that Cross was part of the Italian campaign in WWII, which took place from 1943 to 1945. It ended with an Allied victory and the collapse of Fascist Italy. The Allied army consisted of soldiers from America (including Cross), Britain, France, and many other allied nations across Europe and the the American continent fighting against the Asix powers of Germany and Italy. This campaign in Italy ended at about the same time as WWII ended entirely, in 1945.
