Context

Osiris is best known for not only being the lord of the underworld of Egyptian mythology, but also for his role as the judge of the dead. Once you learn the process that takes place to judge each soul, it is easy to see why Osiris would appreciate getting some help from Nix to take care of any souls in the "overflow" of the waiting room. 

When his son Anubis leads a soul to his judgement hall, The Hall of Truth, where between Osiris and the soul is a scale. Thoth--the scribe of the gods--among others, is also present. The soul would recite some confessions, and then their "heart" (more like their innermost soul, like the kind of heart they talk about in the Kingdom Hearts games) is placed on the scale to be balanced against the white feather of Ma'at, the feather of truth.

If the heart was lighter than the feather of truth, the soul would be free to proceed to a place of heavenly bliss. If the heart was heavier than the feather, however, it would be thrown to the floor to be devoured by Ammit, a deity with the head of a crocodile, causing the poor soul to cease to exist, considered by the ancient Egyptians to be a fate worse than death.
