Then I dug a little deeper in my research. Turns out, just like Elyria, Thera is of Greek origin. It is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, southeast of Greece, and is now known as Santorini. It was the location of the catastrophic Minoan eruption (or Thera eruption), which devastated the Minoan empire, disrupting the political landscape of the ancient world. Furthermore, there are even attempts to connect this eruption with many historical and mythological events, including the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt in the Old Testament of the Bible and the sinking of Atlantis.
On another note, Thera is also the capital city of the fictional Theran Empire in the tabletop role playing game, Earthdawn.
Since Elyria is speculated to be based on the western region of the Balkan Peninsula, and seems to be referred to only as a nation (as opposed to "all of Thera"), my theory is that Thera was the name used to describe the entire Aegean Sea area, or even most of the Mediterranean Sea area, which was once considered "the entire world," or at least, the entire "ancient world."
However, after all of that, one of the missions for Brawlhalla's Battle Pass Season 2 (Synthwave) explained exactly what Thera is: Earth before the fall of Atlantis. That is the official answer in Brawlhalla lore.
I understand where you're coming from when calling Thera the entirety of the ancient Aegean Sea, but the way Thera is described in the game doesn't really allude to this being the case. The Atlantean Gate (which is probably at Atlantis (Atlantic ocean (duh))) and ice floes seem more like an ancient version of the entire world than just Greece.
ReplyDeleteWhat if Thera used to be earth until the Bronze Age collapse of 1200 BCE? Like you said, used to describe the entire world, however the world being most of Afro-Eurasia and the Atlantic instead of Greece.
You may be right. Just about anything I say on this site is a theory until proven right or wrong. Honestly, Thera could be used to describe the entire world, especially when we see that "Thera" is an anagram of "Earth."
DeleteWell since last week of 2nd battle pass we know that Thera was Midgard all along, but only in the past to the certain point in time - "Thera is our world as it was in the legendary times of high fantasy before the fall of Atlantis."
DeleteThera sounds like terra-, which means Earth or land.
