Tororu

Connections

  • Yumiko slew a pack of wolves to protect the hibernating Tororu

Context

"Tororu" is the Japanese word for "troll." It is also perhaps the original name for Totoro! Remember My Neighbor, Totoro? Anyone? Adorable Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli film? Apparently, the name "Totoro" is supposed to be a little girl's (Mei's) juvenile mispronunciation of "tororu."

The first time we see Totoro in the Miyazaki film is when Mei stumbles into his little tree domain, and he is found sleeping. He certainly seems to be the type of creature that would be hibernating in the winter.

So when it says that Yumiko protected the hibernating Tororu from a pack of wolves, think of Yumiko protecting our neighbor, Totoro!
