The name
Jotunheimr in Old Norse means "World of the Giants." In this case, it's the ice giants (since there are fire giants in Muspelheim). This place also has another name, Utgard ("beyond the fence," meaning beyond the realm of the orderly and civilized). Several significant
events happened in Jotunheim, including that one time
Thor lost his hammer, or that time Thor was outwitted by the local giants, or when
Odin sacrificed his eye for unmatched wisdom.
