Sherlock Holmes

Connections

  • An English detective named Mr. Holmes was absolutely stumped regarding Caspian's theft of the Queen's necklace; Caspian enigmatically replied that he left Mr. Holmes all the clues he could possibly need

Context

Although Caspian's lore page never has the full name of Sherlock Holmes, I am going to assume that "Mr. Holmes," the "English detective" is exactly that. Any search using the words "English," "detective," and "Holmes" will point towards Sherlock.

Sherlock Holmes was the creation of British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Even in his own time, Doyle's books about the detective were well received, though he didn't seem to care as much about Mr. Holmes as his fans did. Doyle even managed to kill his character off in The Final Problem in 1893 to allow himself more time and energy to work on his historical novels. But the public wouldn't have it. Sherlock came back in The Hound of the Baskervilles, and an explanation for how he faked his death in The Adventure of the Empty House.

Ever since Doyle's works have entered the public domain, hundreds of adaptations of Sherlock Holmes's adventures were made. Among the more popular or well known ones today are The Great Mouse Detective (Basil and his story being loosely based on Sherlock), Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Holmes (Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), and BBC's 21st-century reimagining in their TV series Sherlock.

For those who are more curious about how and why Sherlock Holmes has so many different versions (especially if you're interested in the "original" Mr. Holmes), this video is especially enlightening.
