Equinox Secundus

Connections

Context

An equinox is a semiannual event (twice a year) in which the day and night are of equal length. They tend to happen on March 20 (spring) and September 22 (fall). It is the opposite of a solstice, in which either the day is at its longest (summer) or the night is (winter).

Secundus is the Latin word for "second," though it also meant "favorable" or "lucky." It could be a proper name or as a simple title. This naming choice is probably not random, considering the Latin term for "first": Primus. This "first" title has shown up a lot more frequently, and it is perhaps worth noting that, among many other things, it is the name of a rock band. Perhaps BMG wanted to be just a little bit subtle, and use Secundus instead of Primus for this Equinox character.
