#52. Magyar

Lore

The Spectral Guardian

“Dearest Sarah,
Since arriving at the castle, I cannot shake this feeling of constant dread. In the ruins of the main hall a great suit of black armor stands untouched by time. When I see it, I feel the awful weight of the castle’s dark history, and I long to complete my research and return to you. Hanson and Williams have vanished. The dog will not stop barking.” –

– Last letter of James Darrow, 1886

“A hundred lost souls in an empty suit of armor? It’s getting weirder around here.”
“Your hands don’t attach to your body.”
“True.”

– Rayman and Asuri at lunch

As the story goes...

Batavian ghost stories tell of the Strazci, 100 elite knights slain in a battle with dragons. Using the power of an unholy relic, the desperate king raised his knights from death, reanimating each suit of dragon-burned armor with a spectre of the undead. With this unholy legion, Batavia terrorized its enemies. To the horror of their foes, the power of the necromancy was such that whenever a Strazci fell, its spirit escaped to join and strengthen a knight that remained. Thus the might of the Strazci went undiminished.

Over centuries, the Strazci won countless battles for their masters, but constant war whittled away the undead company’s numbers. The power of the remaining Strazci concentrated and grew. Finally, at the great Siege of Lions, the final knights fell but one. Only Magyar, the last of the Strazci, survived the losing battle.

Magyar remained to haunt the ruined halls of the abandoned castle until the 21st century finally brought doom. Grown complacent from dispatching meddling intruders armed only with snacks, Magyar was not ready when real monster hunters came armed with ethervision goggles, guns, and the Spear of Saint Cuthred.

In Valhalla, the spirits inside Magyar love battle, steer clear of Nix, and fill out the baritone section of the Asgardian Halloween Spooktacular Choir.

    1. Also I wonder if the relic used for necromancy was maybe Geminius Virens or maybe something connected with Azoth

  2. So, we have the Strazci. When were they made? Who was this desperate king? What connection do they have to Batavia's mad king, Volkov, and/or Caspian?

(Also, who's this James Darrow fellow? Who's Sarah? Who's Saint Cuthred?)

    1. I imagine that Strazci originally lived around the beginning of medieval times before Volkov became king, after he died his succesor probably created the ghost army, because with Volkov absent country was really weak and that's why he was desperate, after some time Onyx came by, later Mad King of Batavia became ruler and either before that or after Caspian was born, next there was Siege of Lions - Diana made Onyx change sides (maybe even Onyx was slain by Mad king or one of Ghost Armors - because there were at least 3 with Magyar at the time of Siege), Mad king was slain by Diana at least once at that point and later 2 times more (even 3 times at the same time during Siege), Caspian fled during Siege, last of the Strazci, but Magyar fell, later at some point Caspian died -> fastforward to XXI century and Isaiah with his team send Magyar to Valhalla

I don't think that the desperate king was the Mad king of Batavia cause I think there were many centuries between his rule and Volkov's, but it could be possible since we dont really know

  3. Probably goes without saying that this guy's the "haunted suit of armor" mentioned in Onyx's lore. Well, him or another one of the 99 other undead Strazci, anyway.

    1. Yeah, tho I think it's better to say that it was "part of Magyar", because of how lore is written we know there were at least 2 other of them
Also it's not clear if Magyar came to be when all of them joined together or if Magyar was one of the knights even before they became ghosts

    2. Although after reading again I'm starting to think that Magyar is one of knights' name or at least name given to this particular ghost or haunted suit of armor rather than name of being that came to be after they all joined together, cause it says "Only Magyar [...] survived" and especially "spirits inside Magyar", so actually it's just still one knight/ghost/haunted suit of armor with spirits that gives it more power inside

  4. Magyar was hinted in onyx's lore: 'With the help of A HAUNTED SUIT OF ARMOR, she discovered the key to her salvation.'

    1. Ada exists, also it's pretty obvious that Isaiah or one of his teammates was the one to kill him
