Katsu the Blind

Connections

  • Among those who knew Koji in "every back alley and gambling house across the empire," described Koji as "disarmingly humble, good gambler," with a "fierce purpose in his eyes"

Context

In Japanese, "katsu" means "cutlet," and refers to meat that has been pounded thin before getting cooked. Katsu could also refer to several people, including Sintaro Katsu. It is also a shout described in Chan and Zen Buddhism to expose the enlightened state of a master and/or to induce initial enlightenment in a student.

It seems it's anybody's guess whether Katsu the Blind is meant to be a reference to anything specifically.
