Context

Amenemhet I ruled from 1991–1962 BC, and did indeed have a pyramid constructed in Lisht (just south of Cairo). It was first discovered and excavated in 1882, but further investigations continued well into the mid 1930s.

What was so "great" about him? Well, he was the first ruler of the Twelfth Dynasty, considered to be the golden age of the Middle Kingdom of Egypt. He was one of the first Egyptian kings to have another rule alongside him (his son, Senusret I). Finally, it seems he was assassinated by his own guards.
