Emperor (China)

Connections

  • The Mad King of Batavia raved, "Steal me the Royal Sceptre of Hamburg, the nose of the Sphinx, and the beard of the emperor of China!"; Caspian delivered them all
  • Wu Shang, as a general, led the Emperor's armies to one victory after another, until he left his station; agents of the Emperor attacked Wu Shang's temple; later, Wu Shang turned the Emperor's own horse against him; the Emperor's men shacked Wu Shang deep inside a volcano, where he breathed in the silent energy of the mountain and his inner eye was opened

Context

The political head of China has been its emperor for many centuries (from 220 BC to 1912 AD). There is a plethora of information out there regarding this role in history (as well as in the present day), and it is beyond the scope of this site to provide much more information than is needed or requested to provide context for the different aspects of Brawlhalla lore.

We can at least look into possible times Wu Shang was alive, however. The fact that the Emperor seemed hostile towards Wu Shang and his monastery possibly narrows the timeline to one of the four Buddhist persecutions in China:

  1. 574 AD, Emperor Wu Di, believed the temples had become too rich and powerful
  2. 577 AD, Emperor Wu Di, again, confiscated land to give to his soldiers
  3. 845 AD, Emperor Wuzong, "Great Anti-Buddhist Persecution" to fund war efforts
  4. 955 AD, Emperor Shizong, needed the copper from Buddha statues
It is quite possible that Wu Shang was a member of the Shaolin Monastery. If so, perhaps he lived during one of the government-sanctioned temple destructions in the 17th or 18th century.

I wasn't able to determine exactly how significant a beard is to a Chinese emperor. I will update this page if I find any relevant information.
