Atlantis

Connections

  • Mako's terrible attack on Atlantis led the city's sorcerers to decide to sink the place beneath the waves; Mako later became queen of Atlantis
  • Mirage learned the language of the Merfolk to better parley with the Atlantean ambassador
  • Sidra and her monster crew ruled the Seas of Thera from the ice floes of Ikrusk to the Atlantean Gate

Context

Atlantis has captured the imaginations of millions, leading to its placement in comics (including Garth/Aqualad, the Atlantean ambassador), Disney films, and elsewhere. Depending on the source, Atlantis could be a human city that was sunk in a catastrophe, or a city built by aquatic humanoids. In the case of Brawlhalla, the mention of Merfolk leads me to believe this version fits the latter definition.

There are several theories about the location of the mythical undersea city of Atlantis, ranging from the Black Sea to anywhere in the Mediterranean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean or even near the Americas. Most theories, however, support a Mediterranean location, especially the island of Thera (aka Santorini).

Merfolk have also shown up in many series of fiction, including Harry Potter and Dungeons & Dragons.
