#29. Mirage (Fatima Sabiq)

Lore

The Dune Weaver

"Scholars have long puzzled over why the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph for "badass" is a combination of magic, scythe, and woman."

– Journal of Archaeology

"Of all the afterlifes, you had to walk into this one. What are you calling yourself these days?"

– Mirage to Orion

As the story goes...

In 1923, occultist, martial artist and spy Fatima Sabiq, codenamed agent Mirage, pursued the nefarious Professor Price back in time through a gate in the pyramid of Pharaoh Amenemhet the Great.

She assumed, as a magic-wielding time-traveler, she would be the strangest thing in Ancient Egypt. She was not even close. The Nile River Valley of 2000 BC was a nexus of magic, aliens, technology, and living myth beyond the wildest speculations of her time.

She discovered Darkah, the city of assassins under the desert dunes, and was inducted into their mystic society. She learned from a forty-foot Sphinx the martial discipline he called sand-weaving. She hitched a ride on a passing Zhaktari star cruiser, and stole the Scythe of Horus from a one-eyed alien. She slew the mad Pharaoh Eh'zath who called plagues of snakes from the sky. She learned the language of the Merfolk to better parley with the Atlantean ambassador. On "Bax" her flying camel, she led the Panther People to victory over the slave caravans of the ram-headed god Khnum.

In Valhalla, she is at home amongst the strange collection of characters who battle in the highest ranks of the Great Tournament. She has been surprised to find old friends, enemies, and even a target in the halls of glory.

Context

Mirage has lots of things going for her. Her explorations of the place have led her into crazy scenarios involving time travel, aliens, and the supernatural. But, her lore and her skins seem to most support the "Egyptian" aesthetic.

Although Mirage's original time was 1923 AD (just one year after Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered), it seems that she spent a lot of time (and accomplished most of her feats) during and after the year 2000 BC, which was part of what is now known as the Middle Kingdom of Egypt (aka The Period of Reunification). Amenemhet I ruled from 1991–1962 BC, and did indeed have a pyramid, so the timeline checks out.

Scythe and spear are pretty good choices for an Egyptian-inspired legend. Sickles and scythes (a scythe is basically a two-handed sickle that can be used without having to bend down over the crops) were essential farming tool in Ancient Egypt. As for the spear, that weapon was common in Ancient Egypt. On top of that, there is an Egyptian martial art called Tahtib., a stick-fighting martial art (now more of a dance), demonstrated in videos like this one.

  1. Maybe Orion's Lore Phrase "Here, I am called Orion." it's a direct answer to Mirage's question.
If that's the case it means someone there named that foreigner with that name.

    1. Orion was released in the game on launch, and because the legends arrive in valhalla when they are introduced to the game Mirage wouldn't have been there to hear Orion say that.

    2. Mordex was already declared in Valhalla, albeit not coded in, given by Diana's lore.

  2. That atlantean ambassador could easily be Mako

Also I'm torn between Price being a future character or an alias for Orion

    1. I doubt Mako would be the Atlantean ambassador, in her lore it states that she led an attack on Atlantis resulting in Atlantis sinking. It also says that she prefers fighting than governing and that she invented democracy so her subjects would stop asking her questions. Because of this we know she was involved in governing for a time but was the dictator/monarch until of said government.
